On the banks of the River Avon in Salisbury stands Church House, a picturesque listed building steeped in centuries of heritage. Originally known as 'The Falcon', this historic edifice traces its roots back to the mid-15th century when it was built by William Lightfoot. Historic England lists the property as incorporating Audley House—the two buildings forming 99–101 Crane Street.
The North Range, constructed from Chilmark stone and topped with clay tiles, is a two-storey structure dating back to the 15th century. Within its walls lies the Great Hall, boasting a collar beam roof and Minstrels' Gallery, while the 'Solar Undercroft' features an Elizabethan plastered ceiling.
In the mid-sixteenth century, the Chilmark stone and brick constructed West Range was added. The house functioned as a Salisbury parish workhouse in the early 17th century. The West Range is arranged as cellular offices, providing a link between the North and South Ranges on each floor level.
In 1630, Sir Mervyn Touchet (Lord Audley and Earl of Castlehaven) bought the building and named it 'Audley House'. After his execution at Tower HIll, the property was converted to a workhouse.
The South Range, a three-story structure, was added in 1728 and today houses a combination of residential flats and commercial offices. In 1881, the house was bought by Thomas Sanctuary, the Archdeacon of Dorset, and renovated for use as a Diocesan Church House.
A medieval archway provides access to a central courtyard. There are two gardens, one of which fronts the River Avon, offering tranquil riverside views.
Today, Church House is run by The Church of England Diocese of Salisbury and is used for meetings, events, and training. Its rich history and captivating architecture make it a truly unique and inspiring venue.
